Negation — nicht vs. kein

Two ways to say "no" or "not" in German — and they are NOT interchangeable. This trips up many learners.

nicht

Negates verbs, adjectives, adverbs and specific nouns
(with a definite article or possessive)

kein

Negates nouns that have an indefinite article (ein/eine)
or no article at all

nicht — Examples

Ich arbeite nicht.

I don't work. — negating a verb

Das Essen ist nicht gut.

The food is not good. — negating an adjective

Ich lerne nicht heute.

I'm not learning today. — negating an adverb

Ich mag nicht den Lehrer.

I don't like the teacher. — negating a noun with definite article

kein — Examples (replaces ein/eine or no article)

Ich habe kein Geld.

I have no money. — Geld has no article normally, use kein

Das ist keine Schule.

That is not a school. — replaces eine Schule (fem.), so kein → keine

Amina hat keinen Bruder.

Amina has no brother. — replaces einen Bruder (masc. Akkusativ)

kein follows the same endings as ein

💡 Quick rule: Ask yourself — "does a noun use ein?" If yes → use kein. If no noun or it uses der/die/das → use nicht.
