German Articles — der, die, das

Every German noun has a gender. You must learn the article with the noun. There is no shortcut — but there are patterns!

💡 Memory tip: Always learn the article WITH the noun. Don't learn Buch — learn das Buch. Think of the article as part of the word. Use colours: blue for der, purple for die, green for das.

Usually DER (masc.)
Days: der Montag
Months: der Januar
Seasons: der Sommer
Ending -er: der Lehrer
Ending -ling: der Frühling
Usually DIE (fem.)
Ending -ung: die Wohnung
Ending -heit: die Freiheit
Ending -keit: die Möglichkeit
Ending -tion: die Nation
Ending -schaft: die Freundschaft
Usually DAS (neut.)
Diminutives -chen: das Mädchen
Diminutives -lein: das Fräulein
Infinitives as nouns: das Essen
